Radio in the Bahamas: Junkanoo culture, rake-and-scrape and island broadcasting

Spanning hundreds of islands and cays across the Lucayan Archipelago, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas possesses a dynamic broadcasting history rooted in maritime communication, civic life and cultural celebration. From early state broadcasting launched in the 1930s to the pioneering deregulation and expansion of private commercial stations in the 1990s, radio has long served as the essential voice connecting Nassau on New Providence, Grand Bahama and Freeport, and the diverse Family Islands. Today, terrestrial frequencies and streams preserve national heritage while delivering contemporary Caribbean sounds to listeners across the archipelago and the international Bahamian diaspora.

Broadcasting in the Bahamas reflects vibrant musical and community traditions, showcasing popular formats including:

Junkanoo culture and rake-and-scrape rhythms: Iconic Bahamian sounds driven by goatskin drums, cowbells, brass horns, whistles, and the distinctive scraping of carpenter saws and accordion melodies, especially prominent during national celebrations.

Reggae, soca and Caribbean sounds: Festive Caribbean genres that energize local airwaves with dancehall anthems, regional soca hits and melodic island vibes.

News, politics and public talk: In-depth current affairs, national dialogue and community talk shows discussing civic life, economic developments and weather bulletins across the islands.

Gospel, inspirational and family programming: Spiritual music, praise worship and uplifting messages that hold a deep-seated place in Bahamian daily life.

Urban contemporary, pop and retro classics: High-energy hip-hop, R&B, dance hits and beloved retro oldies spanning the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

Whether broadcasting over terrestrial frequencies in major population hubs or via high-definition digital streams online, Bahamian radio stations keep communities informed, united and entertained.
